Sri Lanka simply has it all.
You can always include the short trip to Maldives and make this the perfect multi location honeymoon you've always dreamt of. Just ask our experts and they can give you advice on how best to include this.
Welcome to Sri Lanka. Upon your arrival into Colombo International airport you’re very own personal guide will be waiting to meet you and take you to your car. You will be transferred to the Westcoast city of Negombo. You’ll be checked in to your hotel and the remainder of the day will be at your leisure to explore this ancient fishing town with its gorgeous sandy beaches. Or simply relax and enjoy the start of one of the most memorable journeys you’ll ever take.
You’ll leave Negombo after breakfast and be driven to the City of Kandy. En route you’ll have the option of visiting the Elephant Orphanage in Pinnawala. Home to the largest herd of captive elephants in the World, the Orphanage has cared for elephants since 1975. This is a real must-do and gives you unrivalled close-up access to elephants close to their natural environment as possible. Moving on you’ll be taken to the City of Kandy and checked into your hotel with the remainder of the day at your leisure.
Onwards to the spiritual and physical heart of Sri Lanka the former home of the King and classified as a UNESCO world Heritage site. The Temple of the Tooth relic is a sacred shrine housing the tooth of the Buddha. Smuggled into the country in the 4th century A.D, the relic is considered the country’s most prized possession.
The day continues with a tour of the city with your tour guide and you can always end up at the beautiful Botanic gardens before heading back to your hotel.
Another early start but today’s drive will be one of the most spectacular drives you’ll ever do, with the backdrop of gushing waterfalls, lush green hilltops to your left and a spectacular view across the many tea plantations to your right. This old British hill station is the heart of the tea country and before checking into your hotel you’ll visit a tea factory and see for yourself how the nations favourite brew is made. If you like your teas then the factory has a vast array for you to sample and buy at really good prices. Once you’re checked in why not explore the surroundings of this quint town which might just fool you into thinking you’ve gone back in time to a British country village. You’ll soon see why its commonly referred to as “Little England”.
All aboard! Take the train to the Southern side of the Hill country. Feel the breeze rush through your hair as you peer out the window of the 19th century built trains through the hazy mist hugging the lush green mountain top in all its glory. Take in the spectacular views of the tea plantations as you ascend up to the town of Haputale, a quite retreat for those wanting to get away from the hustle and bustle of life below. Walk through the quite streets and aim for one of the markets where you’ll see the quite little town come to life in a mix of cultures coming together.
The Lipton’s seat is one of Sri Lanka’s highest and most spectacular viewpoints. The area was regenerated back in 1890 as Sir Thomas Lipton bought hectares of tea plantations and made tea to ship back to the UK. The green fields cover most of the area and Lipton’s seat is a must visit. Reaching the Dambatenne tea factory be sure to get your fill of the good stuff before the walk up to the top, but don’t worry its not a difficult climb through rows and rows of tea plantations. From the top your senses will have a feast on the lavish shades of green covering the lands for miles upon end with the sea adding a blue contrast in the horizon. You’ll have to climb early in the morning if you want to get the best and clearest views from the top before the world is hidden amongst the mist that doesn’t clear till late afternoon.
The remainder of the day will be at your leisure to explore the town and a walk on the train tracks (Yes train tracks) as is common in Sri Lanka will soon pass the day away. As with much of life in this sleepy town the trains are slow and commonly honk their horns from a great distance so you wont have any surprises. A great story to tell those back home and a memory you’ll hold on to for years to come.
You’ve probably already fallen in love with the tea country and your next stop only gets better. Ella is another great quite colonial village in the heart of the Hill country. You should have become accustomed to the leisurely pace of life up in the Hills. The best way to explore this town is to get lost through the tea plantations and you may stumble across splendid waterfalls and temples. Its always easy to find your way back by asking the friendly locals who’ll take great pride in helping you find your way back to your hotel. Relax and enjoy the day as tomorrow will be action packed.
Wake up you’ve got a hike ahead of you. An extremely early start today before the sun rises so please don’t curse us before you reach the top you’ll thank us later! Sri Lanka is known for its amazing walks and hikes and there isn’t much better than the climb up to Ella Rock. A 2 hour trek to the summit is worth every moment when you watch the sunrise over the horizon with an array of wonderful colours at the break of dawn. Its advisable to do this climb early just to see this spectacular moment and also to beat off the heat as the day progresses.
After yesterday’s adventures the fun doesn’t stop today as you’ll be travelling to Udawalawe. Famous for its National Park, you’ll be in for a treat as you visit the National Park and see wild elephants in their natural habitat. Largely made up of grasslands and Forests its one of the best areas to see wild animals in the whole of Sri Lanka. You’ll be taken by a 4x4 jeep through the park in what will feel like a scene from Sir Richard Attenborough’s nature programmes. Keep your eyes peeled as spotting elephants isn’t as easy as you may think but if you’re lucky you’ll get to see a herd of elephants at one of the watering holes along with buffalo’s, deer’s and on rare occasions the elusive leopard.
After so much excitement you’ll be taken back to your hotel to either enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure.
For the next two days we’ll leave you to relax and take in the memories of your honeymoon thus far. You’ll be whisked away to the magical beach town of Marissa, a breath-taking stretch of beach which is exactly what you’d have wanted on your dream honeymoon. This crescent shaped beach is one of the best in Sri Lanka and with its close proximity to the Maldives you’ll smile knowing you made the right choice in choosing Sri Lanka. While away the day with a fresh coconut in hand whilst you relax in a hammock and watch the sun set over the mesmerising Indian Ocean.
Another day of pure relaxation if you wish or you could get up and take a boat tour to see the dolphins and Whales that frequently visit the bay. Another major plus of Sri Lanka is its diversity in sea-life and this fishing village is blessed with being the leading whale-watching centre’s. Be sure to try out one of the small restaurants or cafes along the beach which serve freshly caught seafood barbeques. You wont taste anything better, anywhere!
Its your honeymoon and you don’t want to cram in too many activities and forget to enjoy each others company. Further down the South coast the town of Hikkaduwa will be home for the next two nights. Hikkaduwa is one of the best and most frequented beaches in Sri Lanka with its popular diving and snorkelling spots in the crystal clear waters. This is a more populated beach town than Mirissa so you wont be too far away from the hustle and bustle of life but don’t be fazed as the beach stretches for over 4km so plenty of space to find for yourselves.
The day is yours and a great way to spend it would be a spot of snorkelling, diving or water sports. Away from the beach you can find a number of islets surrounded by coral formations. You’ll get to see a diverse range of marine fish and large water turtles that congregate around the reefs. For diving enthusiasts there are also diving schools nearby that offer PADI courses and equipment and you can explore up to four shipwrecks for that extra wow factor.
You’ve almost come to the end of your memorable journey so take in as much of Sri Lanka as you can. If that doesn’t appeal then why not visit one of the specialist Ayurveda treatment spa’s leaving you refreshed and rejuvenated for your journey back home tomorrow?
That’s it, time to leave behind this spectacular land and head back to the airport for your flights home. We’re sure its not Goodbye but until we meet again!
